OUR SERVICES: PARENT & FAMILY COUNSELING

Parent & Family Counseling at the Louisville Family Center is not another set of strategies that will tell you how you “should be” better parents. Instead, relationships are viewed through a holistic lens, seeing the family as a unique learning container.

Counseling gives you the chance to have your particular struggle be heard, while also being offered a new perspective, shining a light on areas of discomfort that may want some attention. Rather than telling you that something is broken, we support each member of the family in finding their way to loving the person they already are. This allows everyone to connect in more authentic ways with one another.

COUNSELING MIGHT BE RIGHT FOR YOU IF…

  • Your family is going through a death in the family, a divorce, or some other life challenge, and you feel you could benefit from some outside perspective.
  • A parent or adolescent in the family is experiencing depression, anxiety or wanting support in contemplating their purpose in life.
  • You and someone you care about (brother, sister, partner, etc.) would like help in transforming the tensions and conflicts in your relationships into opportunities for healing.
  • You are an individual or couple wanting accompaniment and/or counseling in your parenting or your own relationship.
  • Your family is seeking support in your relationships with one another and wanting to move away from battles and drama into more authentic ways of connecting.
  • Your family includes individuals with unique challenges or behaviors, such as trauma from adoption or birth, special needs or gender exploration.

Making the decision to have a child is momentous.  It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.

Our Approach

Family counseling can look many different ways.  Sometimes it does involve every family member, in order to ensure all perspectives and dynamics are present and considered.  Each family is truly it’s own system, with each member playing different roles in different moments, and bringing awareness to these modes of interacting can offer powerful opportunities for understanding and change.

Family therapy may also at times consist of individual sessions with different members or subgroups, or even meetings between divorced parents wanting to work on their co-parenting.

The counselor in a family therapy is offered the honored role of getting a glimpse into the inner workings of a family, allowing each person’s point of view to be witnessed and heard.  In addition, by modeling connection to self, and through the use of mindfulness techniques, somatic awareness, and non-violent communication, the therapist can offer new ways of viewing and tackling the often repetitive conflicts.
